Geosynthetic

It is a natural or artificial product made of coir, jute, hemp, polymeric and metallic materials is used along with soil in geotechnical constructions.  The introduction of Geosynthetic has entirely changed the way of practicing the geotechnical engineering works.  It proves to be an innovative product in solving difficult problems economically and the use of locally available materials helps in maintaining the sustainability.  Skilled labour is not necessary while using the Geosynthetic products which found to be an added advantage.  Installation of Geosynthetic is found to be simple where heavy machinery is not required.

Type of Geosynthesis

Some of the types of Geosynthetic are listed below:

  • Geotextiles
  • Geogrids
  • Geonets
  • Geomembranes
  • Geocomposites
  • Geocells, etc

From the above types, geotextile, geomembrane, and Geocomposite are reviewed based on their distinct properties, uses, installation, and cost.  Table 1 gives the simple definition of the specified three Geosynthetic products.

Geotextile is engineered sheet-like product made of natural or synthetic materials which are used for filtration, separation, drainage, erosion control and acts as reinforcement in certain engineering works.  It is manufactured as both woven type as well as non-woven type.  Thick geotextiles sheets are generally used for cushion and drainage purposes.

Geomembrane is a thin, impervious sheet of polymeric material used for lining purposes.  In case of engineering works like landfills, reservoirs, canals and other containment facilities, it acts as a cover for liquid and solid storage facilities.
